A dirty tanker refers to an oil tanker which has been carrying 'dirty' petroleum products such as crude oil and residual fuels such as heavy fuel oils. 'Dirty' products are sometimes casually referred to in the industry as 'black' products.

On the other hand, a clean tanker refers to an oil tanker which has been carrying oil products that Do Not stain the surfaces in contact with them. Examples include jet fuel, gasoline and diesel oil. These are sometimes casually referred to as 'white' products.
